Brecksville Branch Closes Due to Flood and Contamination

June 23, 2006 — The Brecksville Branch of Cuyahoga County Public Library is closed due to flood water damage and  sanitary sewage contamination. It is estimated that the branch will be closed for six to eight weeks. There has been extensive damage done to the carpeting, the under carpet cabling, and the telecommunications system.

Library materials on lower level shelves were also damaged. Environmental specialists are working to identify the level of hazard and contamination inside the building. Library officials are investigating the possibility of relocating the branch operation while the clean-up and refurbishing of the building takes place.

Carney-McNicholas crews went into the building Sunday and Monday this week to pack the collection not damaged by the flood.  Over 3100 cartons were packed and loaded into 3 climate controlled storage trailers.  Two 40 yard dumpsters were loaded with the damaged part of  the collection after scanning by CM crews so a data base of destroyed items could be made.  The rest of this week CM will disassemble the shelving in the library for cleaning and storage while repairs are made to the building.

Wow! What a great project. This reminds me of when Nikon's basement flooded with 8 feet of water in the late 80's. I had a project supplying four (4) refrigerated trailers that we moved the company records into. We were then responsible to make sure that the trailer's refer units remained fueled (ie cooled) with diesel while an onsite free-dry company processed all of the damaged records. The project lasted the better part of 2 months and I can remember hauling 5 gallon cans of diesel over to the Nikon property in my VW Rabbit. I had to be very careful not to spill any in my car!

Is the library freeze drying any of the damaged collection to retain the original works?

Very interesting stuff you guys are doing!

The part of the collection that was in direct contact with water was not worth the cost of freeze-drying.  The collection is currently in climate trailers with the temperature setting at 20F.  Lowering the temperature lowers the relative humidity which should have a conservation effect on the balance of the books.  We did take the electronic equipment from the library to a de-contamination service in Brunswick, OH.

Carney-McNicholas crews began work this week on re-installing a temporary library in a repaired part of the flood damaged building. CM crews Brett Dibel and Jesse Randleman installed enough shelving yesterday to hold approximately 12,000 books.  CM staff, along with the building librarians are loading book carts in shelf order from the containerized part of the book collection not ruined by water and humidity.
