John Carney graduates

John V. Carney graduated from the AMSA Leaders Program at the annual American Moving and Storage Association learning conference in Orlando, FL last week.

The purpose of the Leaders program is to identify industry leaders and managers and establish a special career track for them. In addition to identifying and developing a core group of professional leaders, this program will also benefit both industry and the association by creating loyal, committed, well-informed and well-connected members who can have a positive impact on their peer groups and communities. Participants build strong networks that are personally beneficial to them and to their companies.

The annual selection of both a leadership class and a management class composed of a limited number of participants from AMSA's worldwide membership. Both class curricula and the seminar will run in tandem, with the leaders group receiving advanced training in working with their company's financials, thinking strategically, and in learning how to effectively work with legislative representatives.

The program goal is to "graduate" a class of members who:

Possess a heightened awareness and understanding of the outside forces and factors which influence the business and industry;
Join a network of well-informed, action oriented colleagues who are committed to the success and welfare of their businesses and the industry;
Are prepared, positioned and motivated to assume leadership roles within their own companies, the industry and their communities.

Cape Girardeau

Carney-McNicholas, Inc. movers recently moved the Cape Girardeau Public Library to a temporary facility while the venerable ol' library (built before electricity was discovered, in 1980) gets a renovation.

The move was smooth. CM Library movers have become so adept at this type of project that several notable events regarding this move didn't even pertain to the transfer of shelving and collection, but rather the relative ease at which CM pros completed the job.

In fact, Dennis Cleland constructed eight sections of shelving while sleeping! Cleland, who owns a farm where he harvests cowboy helpers and installation specialists, upon reviewing his handiwork after awakening from the brief slumber, remarked, "those were the best looking units I built all week." Ironically, or perhaps fittingly, the non-fiction books that ended up on Cleland's shelves ranged from Dewey Classification 612 (human physiology) to 636 (animal husbandry amongst hibernating species).

Driver and installation specialist Brett DiBell, looking for a challange, bought a bull at the local livestock exchange. Not only did he curtail the horned beast's predatory instincts, he also coralled 10 library carts with his lasso and convinced the bull to deliver the carts to the destination facility.

Well, as you might have surmised, most of the above is false. But we did move the Cape's library, and we did it well.

CMcN crews begin moving today the general collection on Library North 4 call numbers A-HA to new compact shelving on Library North 5. Starting on Monday June 11 the general collection on Library North 5 with call numbers HB-KE will be shifted into new shelving on Library North 3.

Seville Library

Seville Library, in Medina County, Ohio, USA, Earth, Milky Way is renovating. The CMac attack, led by the inimitable Howard Elko, the most skilled library mover this side of the Cuyahoga, emptied out the entire town library in one long and productive day. Seville's collection will be on Carney-McNicholas, Inc. carts in the Medina County District Library's headquarters until renovations are complete sometime next year.

Cleveland State Administration Move

Carney-Mac, aka Carney-McNicholas, Inc., recently completed a large scale office move on the campus of Cleveland State University in downtown Cleveland. The move entailed moving the administration and periphery offices from their former locations in academic and classroom buildings throughout campus and into a centralized spot. Despite some tricky elevators, CM got the job done on time. Special thanks to CSU facilities guru Shehadah Abdelkarim and his staff of helpers who greatly contributed to the project.

2931 Abbe Rd., Lorain, OH 44054. We completed our move from Berea between February 12 and 28. The previous owner was HKM Direct Marketing. We moved them out, before we commenced our move in. 88 trailer-loads later we are in the building. The building features 36,000 square feet of clean, temperature controlled warehouse floor space with 28' clear height. Besides clear floor space for household goods storage vaults stacked 3 high the warehouse has 1500 linear feet of pallet racking including 7000 square feet with narrow aisle high density rack space. There are four docks with levellers. The physical structure is concrete with ESFR sprinkler protection. All doors are protected with contact alarms, and the space is secured after hours with motion detection devices.
Besides containerized household goods the facility is optimized for the storage of electonics, telecommunications and medical equipment, office systems furniture, trade show and fine arts crates, business records, archival material, and library books. Special projects requiring temporary storage is still a specialty of our company.

moving your elderly parents

This subject is really hard, not so much for the mover, but for the kids of parents who don't want to move but have to.

I have been in the moving business for 30 years and have moved thousands of people. Some customers are looking forward to their move, 1st job, getting married, new job with big pay raise, etc.

However, much of our work has to do with people who need to move due to some sort of distress, got fired from work, divorce, death, illness, etc.

All of these situations have issues that have to be dealt with, especially when there is a relocation issue that will come up.

Currently, a major customer source for Carney-McNicholas/United Van Lines is older customers who have to move, some for the first time in over 40 years. For some of these customers, it is a welcome move, especially when both are alive and they are moving to their kids and most important, their grandchildren. Those moves are relatively easy and while they take some pre-planning, the move is alot easier when the attitude and atmoshere is positive.

However, how do you handle a move when your parents should not live alone anymore and the only ones who don't know that is them. There are mulitple issues with this type of move. First of all, at some point in time, the children must take control of the parents, that may be the hardest part to do. It is stressful, especially when there is resistance. Once you establish the fact that you are going to move them, you need to establish where you are going to move them. Is it long distance or local? Is it into another house/condo or is it time for assisted living? Finally, what can they take from the house and is it worth it to take their "old" stuff?

Local moving is relatively easy. It does not involve distance and if the parent can stay in the same town, it does ease the pain of moving. Moving local distance creates some logistical problems, including personal travel for both the children and the parents.

For those moving their parent long distance, I would suggest the following. First of all, don't do it on a short notice time frame, unless of course there is an immediate need. We once moved a customer to Minnesota because he almost burned down his house. His son came in and moved him out in less than one week. If you can plan for this, then devote some time and energy to it. Make sure that your siblings are involved also.

Should you move this "old stuff"? This may be the most common question we get. From my experience, sometimes the move is so traumatic that in order to minimize the trauma, you may need to have your parents keep some of their belongings. The combination of new town, new house, and all new furniture can sometimes do more harm than good. Your mom might like her old dining room set (it could be sentimental), or you dad might like his chair and TV, or his old bed. Even though alot of this may not make sense, you have to have some consideration of the whole picture and not just the value of items that shoud/should not move.

Finally, if you are doing this from long distance, you can contact us to help start the process. We can start early discussions about moving such as when, what should be taken, packing, etc. We dont have to get the parents involved unless you want us to go in without you. We have done it probably every way.

Just keep in mind that the move is only a part of this entire sitjuation. We at Carney-McNicholas/United Van Lines want this part to go well. It will be hard enough to deal with other details, let alone the move. Let us help that part go well.

Is moving myself really cheaper?

Millions of Americans move themselves each year. One of the reasons they do that is because they feel that moving companies charge too much money. The other general feeling is that moving companies only handle large shipments.

First of all, all major van lines, especially United Van Lines, handles shipments as small as 1000lbs. The moving of small shipments is common for United Van Lines to handle.

As far as pricing goes, customers need to know that movers consolidate shipments and move them together to build loads. That allows movers such as Carney-McNicholas/United Van Lines to price out small shipments with better rates than renting of trucks will cost. Customers who rent truck make the following mistakes, renting too small of a truck, forgetting to rent pads & dollies, not knowing their furniture has no insurance while moving, under estimating the cost of fuel and overestimating the miles per gallon, assuming that their truck will not break down, assuming that moving cross country in a rental truck is fun, and finally assuming that friends and relatives really want to help you. Movers such as Carney-McNicholas/United Van Lines can take the potential of all of these worries away.

How do I know if I hired a good mover?

When searching the internet for a moving company, there are certain criteria you should establish before contacting a mover.

First of all, if you are moving interstate, a mover is obligated by law to do an in home estimate and offer you binding charges. If the internet mover you are dealing with does not offer in home binding estimates, then stay away from them.

Second, you should establish if the company has an agency agreement with a major interstate carrier. Carney-McNicholas out of Cleveland and Youngstown, Ohio has an agency with United Van Lines, which is the largest moving company in the country. By using an agent for a major carrier, you can get a comfort factor that they follow the guidelines set by the government. All licensed interstate carriers must have safety guidelines such as drug & alcohol screening, criminal background checks, DOT compliance for truck safety, etc. This will give you comfort to know people who move your furniture are not criminals, drunks, or drug addicts. In addition, major carriers who have agents around the country have labor sources at both origin and destination. By using independent movers, you take a chance that the labor they use at either origin or destination is not qualified labor and possibly off the street.

Find out where you are calling or emailing. Match that up with the website location. Many mover scam artists work from their homes or offices that have no trucks, employees or warehouses.

Read the name of the company and make sure that it is who you really wanted. Scam artist tend to "mirror" major carriers. For example, United Movers try to capitalize on people looking for United Van Lines. Potential moving customers who do not properly do their homework could be scammed by a name.

Finally, never pre-pay or deposit any money until you are positive about the company and service level you are going to get. Make sure you have a signed order for service that guarantees load dates, delivery dates, pricing, and valuation on your goods.
